Deciding to take up running either to stay fit or as a new hobby can be very intimidating.  Maybe you discovered your love for running at an early age or decided to give it a shot later in life.  I'm sure most of us would admit that it would have been helpful to have some great advice or have someone that could answer our questions to help us runners get going from the start.

Here are some helpful tips seasoned runners have given us along the way.
  1. Running does not discriminate against age.  You can run at any age.
  2. Shoes matter!  Spend $ on a good pair of shoes that are made for running.  Get fitted.  And always consider going a size up.
  3.  Never obsess over someone that is faster than you!  Slow and steady always finishes the race!
  4. Don't worry about pace.  As a beginner your runs should be easy.  You should be able to have a conversation while you run.
  5. Try the run/walk method!  This is great for those who are beginners.  The best tool to train with is a Gymboss.  You can purchase at www.gymboss.com and get started.  Taking a walk break is not cheating.
  6. Breathing is important.!  This is a skill that you must figure out on your own and do what works best for you.  Breathe in through your mouth or nose and push your stomach out.  You want the air to reach your diaphragm.  Breathe out through your mouth, slowly.  This does take practice.  Most side stitches come  from improper breathing.
  7. Cotton is not good for running but anything made of polyester or spandex is usually good.
  8. Running socks are a necessity! You want to make sure they fit snug and do not slip. Blisters are not your friends.   Swiftwick and Balega socks are some of the best!
  9. Wearing the right bra is critical!  High impact bras are designed for runners and considered the best.
  10. The time will come when a bathroom break is inevitable!  Always have a plan.  Wooded areas and squatting are always an option.  No matter what your mileage is, be prepared.  Keep toilet paper in your bra or in your car.

What this marathoner really thinks...

A "Dopey" at Disney is no easy feat. Lot's of training, eating right, and learning how to pace and fuel is what it takes to get ready for these amazing four days of racing. On the day of the last race which is a full 26.2 miles you stand at the starting line asking yourself a million questions. The one's that quickly come to your mind are...Will I actually PR on this race? Why am I doing this? Should I go to the bathroom before the race starts? As the crowd surges forward, your adrenaline kicks in. At this point, you know that you either paid your dues or that you skimped along the way. There is no lying to yourself here. As a friend always reminds me at the end of training and before each race, "The hay is in the barn now". It's time to show what you got! There is no lying to yourself, the Marathon sees right through excuses, shortcuts, and self trangressions. The Marathon doesn't just build character, it reveals it. All goes well for the first half, but by the pounding of each step, the pain mounts and the intensity of the endeavor amplifies. You remain steadfast and take on each mile as it comes telling yourself you can do this, you worked too hard not to do this. Still, with each draining, aching, thrust forward, that little nagging voice in the back of your head begins producing self doubt. You listen to your heart and the burning desire to complete this goal. You keep putting one foot in front of the other. Courage comes in many forms. Today you will have the courage to keep trying and to not give up regardless of how dire things become. Then you hit mile "20", the little voice is louder but it's now saying what is "6" miles, you got this. At mile "26" you can barely see the course ahead, you just want this run to end. Then out of no where the finish line looms large before you. Tears appear out of no where, you are not sure why you are so emotional. Then it hits you, you have accomplished your dream. You burst across the finish line and all is forgotten. You are liberated from any self doubt, limitations that has held you captive. You have learned more about yourself in the past 26.2 miles than you have previously ever known. You have freed yourself from those chains that bind you. Yes, you may be tired, sore, and may not walk for days but you will never feel so free. You are now a Marathoner and you will wear this distinction in all areas of the life you live. The distinction won't be in the medals you wear but will be deep inside your heart. Nothing can or will ever take this triumph away from you. The gift is yours. You are an achiever, you are a success, you are an inspiration, you are a Marathoner.

A fresh Start

A fresh start is always nice and there is nothing like a new year to set new goals with a new mindset.  When I look back at 2015 - I had no idea how much hubCity runners would accomplish.  Our group completed three 5K's, two 8K's, four 1/2 marathons, one full marathon, one triathlon, and one 48 miles bike race, and a mud run.  Our group started in January in 17 degree weather but stayed consistent, encouraged one another, and most of all stayed committed to reaching the goals we set out to accomplish.  We are only one month into 2016 and some of us have already ran our first 1/2 and full marathon of the year.   I finally PR'd in the Disney Marathon which leaves me with  a great feeling of accomplishment.  Next on the list for me and the group is some 5K's, and a half marathon by March.   Our group will also be more challenged this year by endeavoring into the triathlons and possibly a half iron man  in the spring and summer.  The best goals I have set for myself is to 1. Sign up for a race, 2.  Run three days a week, 3.  Eat healthy, 4. Keep accountability with a group or friend.  Here's to a great 2016!
